Woof You Be My Valentine?

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we may already be prepping with how different it is going to be this year. Whether you can be with a beau or not, you unfortunately may not be able to go out and do the typical plans one has for this lovely day. But just because you might have to be home alone on this day doesn’t mean the celebration has to stop. You have the most important Valentine probably looking up at your right now waiting to love you unconditionally. Here is how to have the best Valentine’s Day with the cutest Valentine doggo ever.

Fastest Way to the Heart? Through the Stomach!

We all know if you can throw it down in the kitchen, you are bound to cook up a love spell. Make your dog some adorable dog-friendly cookies in the shape of hearts or spell out their names with treats. If they love them more than usual, you can tell them they were made with an extra heaping tablespoon of love.

If you are cooking up a dinner for one, make it for one and a half! Since you are already steaming up some brown rice and vegetables, before you add your seasoning, put some aside (and maybe some boneless and skinless chicken while you’re at it) for your pup. That way when you sit down for dinner, they are too. And they are enjoying the same meal as you and the best part is that they can’t tell you if the chicken is too dry - they’ll love it regardless!

Relive Your Middle School Art Days

Remember those days where you would give the funniest, biggest, sparkliest Valentine card to your crush but acted like it was NBD? Pssh. Yeah. I never did that either. But maybe I will for this Valentine’s Day. Make a custom Valentine’s Day card for you and your dog. All you need is some craft paper, glitter, a printed out picture of your pooch, and a dash of glue here and there - then bam!

You may not want to give it to them because you know...dogs and ripping things up and whatnot. But maybe hang it up where you both can appreciate it and maybe even make it into a yearly tradition!

Spaw Day Anyone?

Some people like to spend Valentine’s Day getting pampered with their SO. You can spend the day with your doggo in your own, at-home spa treatment! Maybe your dog loves baths, so give them a nice little oatmeal and massage treatment with some scented candles to balance out that wet dog smell. Or if they love the blow dryer, give them a little Beyonce moment and a blow out at the same time! But I think every pupper would love a mini massage with some long pets and to finish up, belly scritches.

If your dog isn’t sensitive to nail stuff, you can find some really cute dog-friendly nail polish on Amazon or at your local pet store. You can give the two of you an adorable matching mani-pedi! Afterwards, dress them up in their favorite bow or tie and they are ready to be glamorous for the rest of the day!

Reminders

Although we would love to pamper our dogs every waking moment of the day, please keep in mind the following during holidays or celebrations like Valentine’s Day:

  • Keep chocolate, other candy, and alcohol out of reach

  • Never give your dogs cooked bones from chicken or steaks (uncooked are fine, but monitor as they can be a choking hazard for smaller dogs in particular)

  • Dogs cannot have onions, garlic, avocado, chocolate, and olives so if you want to treat them, pick some alternatives or just doggy treats will do, too

  • If you or your neighbors light off fireworks, be sure that your dog is in a familiar room or crate with the TV or music on. If you can, let your dog get on the couch or bed with you, snuggle them for a little bit and let them enjoy watching TV with you to calm them down. You keeping calm will absolutely help their anxieties (even if they continue to be scared)

  •  Too many treatos can make a doggo sicko - do any and all of these things in moderation as to not overwhelm our puppy’s mind or stomachs

From me and mine to you and yours, have a happy, healthy, and safe Valentine’s Day!
